FIFTEEN

“You know, you almost didn’t win.”

Chris’s voice had to be just about the least welcome sound that Andy had ever encountered. Not just because of their past, either, but because of the smug tone. Like Chris knew things that Andy didn’t.

Of course, Chris always sounded like that. Andy had fallen for it once, had thought that Chris was wise and smart, but really, he was just cunning. Like an animal, nothing more. He had a good sense for things that could affect him, and that was about it.

Chris would always resent, maybe even hate, Andy, he knew. For the part that Andy had had in bringing Chris down, for his fall from grace from sheriff to prison inmate and convicted felon, Chris would constantly be seeking to undermine Andy, to make things uncomfortable for him. He knew that, so listening to this man was absolutely the last thing that he should do.

“This works better when you just sign the form like a good little boy and then get out of my sight,” Andy growled. He had felt like he was walking on air ever since his big win, and having Jeffrey living with him was just the icing on the incredibly amazing cake. The last thing he wanted was for Chris to shit all over everything, as he knew that his former best friend had a habit of doing.

“So hostile,” Chris clucked, but there was delight clear in his eyes and Andy knew then that he had let far too much show. Chris really did shut up and go away if he was ignored, at least for a little while. But give him attention, and he shone, though not in a good way. Andy had just let his temper get the best of him.

“Sign. It.” Andy forced his voice to be calm and even. He hoped. From the sparkle of delight in Chris’s eyes, though, maybe it was more gritted out like Andy was trying not to strangle this pain in the ass, which was actually pretty accurate.

Chris played with the pen, but he didn’t sign. Of course, he knew that Andy wanted him gone, so he would do anything to keep himself around. If Andy had wanted him to stay, Chris would have left in a second. It was just the way that the other man worked, contrary to say the very least.

“It’s true, you know,” Chris told him, his tone conversational as he spun the pen between his blunt fingers. “You didn’t win by as much as usual. It’s normally a landslide. So how does that feel, to know that you’re losing your grasp on this piece of shit town? Sheriff? I bet I won’t be calling you that after the next election.”

There was just enough truth in that to sting, and if Chris had been anyone else, if he had been the man that Andy had thought he was back when they had been friends, he might have sat down and told him how it felt. He had once trusted Chris and told him things that he had never told anyone else.
